I still think these two are going to be our entry way into animated Devastator, and possibly even a future Animated Superion. If it has a bot mode combination, it's either Pants Prime style, or could also be like energon bulkhead, or sonic convoy. Uh you quoted the same style, and asked if it was this pants style, or this pants style, where's the choice? ^^ >.> So who asked what style this will be.
Not sure if they trains were either, but it explains why the car brothers enquired over this since they couldn't, suggesting those two teams had a familial type relationship within.Į-Grimlock and Pants prime are the same style combining.
Even Magnus could combine with his brother Prime, as could the Trainbots, and Build Team, though the build team was never established as a family type unit. The car brothers being the only 3 that didn't.

Probably both, and it also plays up to the aspects in later series (namely RiD) that 'brothers' can combine. I'm curious if they dual combine in both forms, or if it's just one. These two being brothers also gives an added notion of reasons behind why they can combine, since it suggests protoform molds forged around the same time of similiar bot series, among many more ideas that could be used. So the 'Geewun' excuses and slander are far offbase as far as I'm concerned on why. G1 need not apply, it just doesn't work well with the physics they've given us for their scope thus far. And I've tried to visualize it in various ways. I personally just don't see how it's going to work in general for the movie. Prime being ground based, and jetfire being aerial, create an issue as to 'how' they can combine as their scaled alts are vastly different, and a bot mode configuration would entail potentially prime flying of his own accord. The constructicons at least can get by with it somewhat by having the combining happen on the road, or by them in bot mode grabbing their limb spots as he rises and transform into limbs, or otherwise similiar manners. Something that makes Jet convoy also problematic. Limbs just flying through the air with no propolsion or form of 'lift' create a problematic area. Even Devastator has this issue of how he combines, but the suggested idea him hints at more of a driving type combining or also a more flowing living combining method. Both of which would look extremely clunky on screen during the combination, just as many of us aren't thrilled to see the combination be handled more viral like in flowing around the other. All of us should also realize that parts forming just won't work on the big screen either, which suggests sonic convoy(backpack), or pants prime type combining. Some of us have brains and can think on our own. If they were, how had he gotten lost? Why did prime abandon him? And how did the allspark manage this if they were 'forged' at seperate times? Before you want to troll and pick fights by saying it's cause it's not Geewun, maybe some fans aren't as dictated by that as the actual haters. This begs the question of when exactly jetfire left the planet, why, and if these abilities have always been present.

But that discussion is left for the movie forum, as there are plenty more reasons as dictated by their own story it just can't work that Prime would have always been able to combine, nor should the aspect of 'burning justice' combination ever be used in the movie. Devastator as stated before makes sense, but Jet Convoy lacks sense barring certain story centric suspension possibilities(namely the allspark shard), as they had already set precedent based on optimus being co-race leader with megatron, as well as the fact none of the autobots combined in the first movie with prime as he was getting his butt whooped. Things like the movie vary based on reasons behind why since they were so adamant to make a semi realistic sci-fi epic, and not just rehash old tired ideas.

So that gives them free reign for anything.
These two being new characters entirely, gives them the liberty to handle themselves in any way the creators please. Combining is cool when it's handled well.
